Mensuration Cycle Irregular. Prescribed Tablets For Ovulation. Suggested Hormone Injection. Concerned About Side Effects?

Question: my wife's mesuration cycle is irregular and we consulted a doctor and since we've also been trying to have a baby. After doing all the test she gave some medicine to induce mensuration and some tablets for ovulation but after TVS follicle monitor test we found out that there was no egg(ova). Now she has suggested harmone injection newmon to stimulate follicle. I'm concerned about the side effects and long term effects of this injection for the mother and the baby as well. The baby conceived through this injection will be normal or not? we are not going for IVF now and if this injection is given just to ovulate too?

Brief Answer:
There are no evidences of birth defects attributed

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

If your wife has been diagnosed to be suffering from absence of ovulation, she would need to be induced with medication for ovulation in order to conceive. Medications used for inducing ovulation have not been shown to be specifically related to any birth defects in the babies; hyper-stimulation of the ovaries leading to multiple pregnancies can occur.

Ovulation induction is most often done with the drug Clomiphene citrate and it should be used for a maximum of 6 cycles; prolonged induction for more than a year has been shown to be associated with increased risk of ovarian cancers in future. The hormone that is given to enhance ovulation has not been proved to cause any congenital malformations in the babies born; however, hormone-dependent malignancies must be watched out for and prolonged use may cause reproductive tract malignancies in the woman.

Maintenance of a healthy weight, regular exercise and taking a diet replete with fresh fruits and vegetables go a long way toward helping to restore the regularity of the menstrual cycles.

Please follow your doctor's instructions and discuss the future plan of management. With proper planning, you may not need too many treatment cycles. Your wife's complete hormonal profile, glucose tolerance test and tubal patency along with your general check up and semen analysis should be in hand before you go for further treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Please feel free to contact if you need further clarifications. I will be happy to help.
