Noticed Blood In Semen. Causes?

sorry, hello Dr., my name is XXXXXXX
Blood in semen is called hematospermia and can have different causes. Semen contains fluid from the seminal vesicles (structures behind the prostate), the prostate , and the urethral glands
There are different cause of hematospermia, it is usually associated with inflammation of the seminal vesicles or the prostate. In most men it is a self limited process that resolves in 1 to 2 months, if it last more than 2 months investigations are needed.
In terms of the prostate the causes are: inflammation or infection of the prostate (prostatitis), in persons with a history of prostatic biopsy, prostatic cancer.
These would be investigated by performing a PSA, rectal examination and possibly an ultrasound.
In the urethra( passage through which the urine and semen would pass)- there could also be inflammation secondary to infection. If there are cyst or polyps of the urethra, it can also result in hematospermia.
Seminal vesicles- cysts can result in this symptom
Trauma
To determine the cause, your doctor may suggest: (1) urine analysis and culture for bacteria
(2) semen analysis and culture
(3)PSA
(4) imaging tests such as an ultrasound
The treatment would depend on the cause found by the examination and tests.
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
