1. Scout image of the abdomen demonstrates fecal stasis/retention, consistent with the patient's history of constipation.

2. Gastroesophageal reflux to the level of the midesophagus. Mucosal thickening/prominence at the mid-distal esophagus likely sequela of reflux/esophagitis. Suggestion of a small hiatal hernia.

3. Colon visualized by 3 hours 45 minutes postingestion.

4. Paucity of small bowel loops at the right lower quadrant, which may be further assessed with CT scan. Otherwise jejunum/ileum demonstrates grossly normal caliber/contour/mucosal pattern.

Narrative
History: Severe constipation/bloating.

Technique: Fluoroscopic upper GI and small bowel follow-through study was performed. Approximately 55 seconds fluoroscopy time was utilized. Radiation dose was 67.60 mGy.

Comparison: None at this institution.

Findings:

Scout image of the abdomen demonstrates fecal stasis/retention, consistent with the patient's history of constipation. Levoconvex scoliosis of the lower thoracic/lumbar spine.

Following the ingestion of air/barium contrast multiple images were obtained.

There is transit of contrast through the esophagus. Esophagus demonstrates grossly normal contour. Gastroesophageal reflux to the level of the midesophagus. Mucosal thickening/prominence at the mid-distal esophagus likely sequela of reflux/esophagitis. Suggestion of a small hiatal hernia.

Stomach demonstrates grossly normal shape and contour. Gastric mucosal pattern grossly unremarkable. No gastric outlet obstruction.

Duodenum demonstrates grossly normal caliber/contour/mucosal pattern.

Colon visualized by 3 hours 45 minutes postingestion.

Paucity of small bowel loops at the right lower quadrant. Otherwise jejunum/ileum demonstrates grossly normal caliber/contour/mucosal pattern.

What is causing the obstruction, could it be cancer? Another doc on here said GERD but I do not think I meet the criteria for a match. I am still very bloated and uncomfortable. Still unable to poop. My Uncle had colon cancer my fear it is that. Can you give me guidance on these results?

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question. Hope I can be of help for you today. Paucity of gas on abdominal radiography common causes include small bowel obstruction. The small bowel is involved with mechanical intestinal obstruction. It can be functional (due to dysfunctional peristalsis, also known as ileus) or mechanical. Mechanical small bowel obstruction is caused by intraluminal or extraluminal mechanical compression. Can be caused by hernias, malignancies, and various other infectious and inflammatory disorders. That can cause you difficulty passing stool. Chest and abdominal X-ray including abdominal CT scan also can help to rule out any serious tumor that compression to the small bowel. On the test you did Fluoro upper GI, I would like to recommend you to do another colonoscopy to see if there is any problem in the lower intestine.

I hope that It can help you, and please let me know if you have any clarification or question about that, and I would be welcome to discuss it with you further. I hope you have good health.

Best regards,

Over the summer bloodwork showed high traces of H. Plypria (sp) I was put on heavy antibiotics. When i was retested there were small amounts left but I wasnt put on anymore antibiotics.

Nothing is helping my severe constipation. I have dull pain in my stomach that feels worse than yesterday. I feel very physically ill. Im weak and dizzy.

I am thinking I should perhaps go to ER.
