Question: Possible bronchitis? My gf developed sinus congestion last night and this morning when she woke up she began coughing blood up in her mucus. There is a chest tightness as described such as someone sitting on her chest. She is not wheezing though. She is running a low grade fever. Has body aches as well as cold chills. Has a lack of appetite but continues to intake water and fluids. Her family was priorly diagnosed with bronchitis but none of them have any symptoms of coughing up blood. She as well does not have solid bowel movements for the past 2 days.

Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Coughing blood can be caused by many lungs conditions including bacterial inflammation, tuberculosis, lungs cancer, heart failure, heart valves diseases, pulmonary hypertension, Wegners granulomatosis and many more. As you can see some of this conditions are very serious, that is why such symptom should not be neglected. It is advisable to have chest X-ray performed and blood work done.
Depending of the results, pulmunologist visit and chest CT might be necessary.
Lack of stool for two days can be due to constipation caused by dehydration (every fever causes dehydration). So if there is no abdominal pain, no gas obstruction, no vomiting, she should try with increasing mineral water intake and fiber XXXXXXX products. Some laxatives can be helpful as well.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Cystic fybrosis also runs in her mothers side of the family... Could this have anything to do with such rapid symptom changes?

Hello!

I do not know how old is she, however cystic fybrosis would give symptoms in early childhood and gives recurring lungs inflammations which do lead to its injury and destruction. Coughing with blood can be a late symptom of CF, but she would suffer from many infections before.

Hope this will help.

She's 28 going on 29 and is 5'5 around 120 lbs and was priorly diagnosed with bronchial asthma at an earlier age. She is a honorable discharged army veteran and they just diagnosed her with viral sinusitis and had a core temp of 89. She mentioned the CF and ignored such

Hello!

Well, if the CF runs in the family and this was not the first infection, she should make sure she is CF free as without the treatment her lungs and other organs. To do that, she should have either sweat test or CFTR gene mutation check. Just note that the average age of CF diagnosis is from 3,5 to 5 years old.
I would start with mentioned earlier tests (chest X-ray or CT).

Hope this will help.
