Skin Itch, Insect Bite, Bacterial Infection, Fungal Infections, Hyperbilirubinemia
23 year old female, 5'6", 170lbs.
Thanks for your query.
An itch occurs when the skin is irritated by any means, like an Insect bite, bacterial or fungal infections or any systemic abnormality like hyperbilirubinemia (jaundice- here there will excessive itching but it would be present all over the body) etc...
When an itch is scratched with nails or any sharp objects it produces an reaction in which there will an increase in blood flow to that area producing a reddish appearance (inflammed area). Excessive scratching especially with nails can lead to super added infections which gives a burning sensations.
To treat this,
1) Avoid excessive scratching.
2) Calamine lotion would help in soothing the area
2)Topical antibacterial/antifungal ointments will help
3)If it does not heal with topical agents then systemic(oral) antibiotics/antifungals have to be considered.
4)if the cause is a systemic disease, it has to be treated accordingly.
I hope this answers your query. I am available for follow ups as well.
Wish you good health.
