Question: my daughter is living far away at college. She has been having on and off stomach pain and this comes with nausea and vomiting. About 4 years ago she had a ruptured appendix. She has had three surgeries since then (non related). could there be a link. I am tryin to find her a GI doctor but it will take awhile to get an appt. The stomach pains have come and gone over the last 4 years. She also gained a fair amount of weight. She seems to eat pretty healthy and comes from a family that tends to be on the thin side. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

Pain abdomen associated with nausea and vomiting now is not likely to be due to the ruptured appendix surgery she had four years ago.

You need to elaborate her symptoms for an accurate opinion. Hence please answer the following.

1) Does she run a temperature?
2) Since how long is the pain?
3) Does she remember eating stale or rotten food?
4) Is the pain constant at all the times or it comes and goes?
5) Any relation to food intake or passage of urine?
6) Is the pain colicky?
7)Is the pain so severe as to initiate vomiting?
8) Can she pinpoint the origin of pain with her one finger? Please try to describe the point of maximum pain.
9) What are the treatments she has taken till now in last 4 years for this pain?
10) Any history of constipation?

To find out the cause of weight gain, a complete evaluation is needed including her diet, lifestyle, amount of daily activity, hormonal profiles, etc.
Consulting a physician will help in such detailed evaluation and appropriate treatment.

Awaiting your response.

Wishing you good health.
Regards.

Hello.
Thanks for writing again.

From your answers it seems that the pain could most probably be due to Gall Stones, Renal Stones, Gastroenteritis, stomach flu or Gastroenterologist as there are various causes for these symptoms and they can be ruled out only after a physical examination.

Once the cause is confirmed, she will be treated accordingly.

Investigations like stool examination and Ultrasound scan of abdmonen are entailed.

Hope my answer is helpful. Write back if you have further queries.

Regards.
