Suffering From Cold And Runny Nose After Waking Up. Not Cured By Medicine. How To Solve This Problem?

A brief background. I am a Project Manager in a Software Company. My work is mostly sedentary and involves working from at my seat. I am also married with one daughter.
Now the problem. I get cold everyday due to which as soon as I wake up, I start getting sneezes which continues for some time. Also, my nose starts running. At other times, I get a blocked nose. This continues during most times of the year and is more frequent during monsoon and winter. Currently, along with a cold condition, I also have a persistent cough.
I have visited doctors for this earlier and mostly they prescribe Telekast-L along with some cough syrup which takes of the problem for some time. After some days, the problem is back.
Can you please let me know how to solve this problem both short term and long term?
Thanks for posting your query
You are suffering from Allergic rhinitis.
Allergic rhinitis is a common condition characterized by an immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated inflammation of the nasal mucosa following exposure to allergens. It is characterized by sneezing, nasal discharge and nasal congestion.
During allergic rhinitis there is inflammation of the nasal mucosa causing blockage of the sinus openings leading to accumulation of the nasal secretions in the sinus. Also, there is trickling of the nasal secretions behind the throat causing throat discomfort and cough.
The common triggerers of allergy are the pollen, dust, fumes, coils smoke, etc. The bitter truth is, there is no cure for allergy, and only the preventive measures when followed can get rid of allergy.
Preventive measures such as avoiding the triggering allergens such as dust, smoke, strong perfumes and changing the pillow cover every night before going to bed can reduce the further attacks. Also, avoid sleeping directly under the fan or in front of the air conditioner.
My advice to you:
1. Try using steroid nasal spray (such as Fluticasone or Momentasone) and saline nasal spray.
2. Continue Telekast L in the night.
3. Drink plenty of warm water, it will keep your throat and nasal mucosa moistened and also, reduces the irritation.
4. Avoid chilled food and beverages/smoking/alcohol/coffee.
With the above measures you should be definitely alright.
Hope I have answered your query; I will be available for the follow-up queries.

1. What kind of weather is suitable for me and what should I avoid?
2. Are there any specific foods (other than the ones mentioned above) that I should eat or should avoid?
3. Does exercise help or not in this case?
4. You have mentioned continue Telekast -L at night. For how long? Should I take this only when the situation is bad or daily.
Welcome back
1. What kind of weather is suitable for me and what should I avoid?
A: Cool and pleasant weather is the best, but unfortunately that is not available every time. Best is to avoid chilly weather and the place full of dust or smoke.
2. Are there any specific foods (other than the ones mentioned above) that I should eat or should avoid?
A: The allergy to food stuff varies from individual to individual. You are the best judge, avoid those food materials or those food stuff which will induce allergy. The commonest foods for which some people are allergic to are eggs, milk, chocolate, chicken, sea food such as fish & oysters, etc.
3. Does exercise help or not in this case?
A: Exercises does help in building up of the immunity, but it does not cure allergy.
4. You have mentioned continue Telekast -L at night. For how long? Should I take this only when the situation is bad or daily.
A: Initially take it more a month; later, once your allergic problems are stabilized then you can use it only when you are having severe problems.
I wish you good health.
