Suffering From Epilepsy And Brain Stroke. Is Epilepsy Hereditary?
Hi,
Thank you for contacting Healthcare magic.
Epilepsy is hereditary in some cases, but not in all cases.
Based on the causes, epilepsy can be classified into three types:
1. Idiopathic- due to hereditary causes, about 50% of all epilepsies are in this group.
2. Secondary- due to another disease in brain such as stroke, head injury, brain infection, etc. 30% of all epilepsies are in this group.
3. Cryptogenic- no known cause of epilepsy. About 20% of all epilepsies.
In summary, if there is a family history of epilepsy, there is a higher risk of getting epilepsy, but only a small risk. In this case, about 25% risk.
Best wishes,
