Question: My Grandfather was suffering from epilepsy. My was was also suffering from brain stroke follwed by epilepsy. Is epilepsy heridetiery?

Epilepsy is hereditary in some cases, but not in all cases.

Based on the causes, epilepsy can be classified into three types:
1. Idiopathic- due to hereditary causes, about 50% of all epilepsies are in this group.
2. Secondary- due to another disease in brain such as stroke, head injury, brain infection, etc. 30% of all epilepsies are in this group.
3. Cryptogenic- no known cause of epilepsy. About 20% of all epilepsies.

In summary, if there is a family history of epilepsy, there is a higher risk of getting epilepsy, but only a small risk. In this case, about 25% risk.

Thank you for your answer Sir. Since I have got 25% chances of getting epilepsy, what precautions I have to take right from now so that I do not become a burden on my family.

Please ensure The following:

1. Adequate night sleep- 7-8 hours per night. Avoid night shift duties.

2. Eat food on time and avoid fasting.

3. Avoid any major stress and tension.
