Suffering From Vitiligo. Is It A Hereditary Diseases?
Question: Hi, I have a query related to Vitiligo. My girlfirend's grand mother has vitiligo, does it get transferred to the girl later or our future generations. Can you please help
Dear Patient,
Thanks for your query to XXXXXXX
Vitiligo as a disease has a genetic linkage.
its an autoimmune disease with a heriditary pattern- but not always.
Chances of acquiring Vitiligo is 2% in normal population while if one parent is affected chances increase to 25% and if noth the parent are affected then 50%.
Now if the grandmother is affected by vitiligo then though the girls genetic makeup does have genes of her grandmother through his father but the chances again are as nominal as a common population.

The chances of re occurrence is as nominal as common population means is it 2% or more than that?
The grandmother is the mother of girl's mother. So please consider this as well.

Dear Patient,
Thanks for your follow up query.
The chances of girl being affectd with vitiligo is slightly more than 2%. as she has a family history in her grandmother.
There is no hard and fast rule of such genetic linkages and hence to come to an exact probability is tough but the chances of the girl getting vitiligo is meagre.
