Question: I have taken benazepril . It has made me irratable and act kind of crazy , When I am in a large group speaking I lose my train of thought and get kind of paranoid. makes me feel like I am going a little crazy . When I am off it I am better, but is that drug really that strong? I took metFormin with it - started both at the same time. Is there a better blood pressure medicine to take without these side effects?

Brief Answer:
Ramipril or ARBs are alternatives

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

It is unusual for ace inhibitors to cause cognitive dysfunction and is well tolerated by most patients. However, irritability and cognitive dysfunction are possible. If its a bothersome effect then another ace inhibitor can be tried e.g ramipril. If ACE inhibitors continue to cause such side effects then alternative ARBs such as telmisartan, losartan etc can be suggested as replacements. ACEIs or ARBs are ideal drugs especially in diabetic patients as they lower the chances of long term renal damage.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
