Suggest Alternative Medication For Omeprazole

Posted on Wed, 10 May 2017
Question: After undergoing an endoscopy with findings of presence of intestinal metaplasia in the proper anatomic site within the esophagus is consistent with Barrett's esophagus. There is no dysplasia in this specimen. I do not want to take OmeprazoIe 20 mg due to constipation. I use to suffer with constipation and finally relieved with Citrucel. Are there other alternative treatments/aids that I could take. I prefer taking TUMS because it also provides calcium which I require

Brief Answer:
Tums will not improve XXXXXXX esophagus

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

To treat XXXXXXX esophagus, we need to reduce the acid secretion in stomach. This is best achieved with proton pump inhibitor like omeprazole, pantoprazole, etc. If you can't take those because of constipation, you can consider raniditine or famoditine which will also do the job, with less constipation.

Tums just neutralizes the acid, so for long term control, it is not good. As there is no dysplasia, only medical treatment is required. Ablative therapies or surgery not required.

Hope this helps.
Regards

Unfortunately, these medications have too many adverse side effects. I went through 10 horrible months when I had to change blood pressure medications. In fact, I landed in intensive care while on vacation in Florida visiting my sister and was there for 3 days due to the medication. When I returned to D.C., the cardiologist continued for with more changes. Lost 14 pounds and still ongoing for 10 months not keeping my pressure down. When I retired to Florida where I landed in the hospital, I remembered the doctor (nephrologist) and who took care of me. It took him 2 months to finally bring my pressure down. I am petite in size, not over weight.

I would like to consider a more natural substance. Looking into deglycerrhizinated licorice (DGL), slippery elm, glutamine, and aloe Vera. Having serious osteoporosis, and constipation problems, I cannot go down another grueling path.

Brief Answer:
Then we need to observe you frequently

Detailed Answer:
These drugs are seldom having so many side effects. So I would like to rule out other drugs or other causes for your symptoms. I hope your doc had ruled them out.

In any case, if you are totally unable to tolerate them, only option is to keep under observation by frequent endoscopies and ablate if any dysplastic areas.
