Suggest Alternative Medication In Place Of Ecosprin

default
Posted on Sat, 11 Jun 2016
Question: Hi,
My father had angioplasty 6 years back.
Since then he is taking ecosprin.

Now he needs to have a dental surgery for removing the vertical impacted wisdom tooth.

The dentist advised him to stop taking ecosprin.

So is it safe to stop taking ecosprin?
How long does he need to stop?

Is there any other alternative instead of stopping ecosprin?

Brief Answer:
It is safe to stop ecosprin for few days to a week during dental procedure.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. Ecosprin is a blood thinner and prevents blood from clotting in patients with heart conditions.

2. Many doctors advise patients to stop taking ecosprin before a surgery to avoid excessive bleeding. This is a slightly controversial topic and some doctors might vary in their opinions.

3. For major surgeries, ecosprin is stopped one week before the surgery and can be restarted after the surgery following recovery. Most doctors restart ecosprin 1 to 2 weeks after major surgery.

4.In case of dental surgeries, many dentists prefer stopping the ecosprin 3 days before surgery and re starting it 3 days to a week later depending on heart condition.

5. There is no significant risk in stopping ecospirin before the planned dental surgery and most doctors recommend it to avoid bleeding and complications.

6. In case of your father, I suggest that he consults the cardiologist and gets evaluated for fitness for dental surgery. The ecospirin stopping and restarting can also be discussed with the cardiologist. This is because every patient is different and the consulting cardiologist will guide you after doing a clinical evaluation.

7. Few dentists can prefer to proceed without stopping ecospirin but this has a small risk of excessive bleeding. In such patients, the dentist has to be careful and control bleeding during tooth extraction.

Hope your query is answered.
