Suggest An Antibiotic For Prophylaxis Against Bacterial Endocarditis

default
Posted on Fri, 29 Apr 2016
Question: Yesterday my tooth was pulled in preparation for an implant. I have had an artificial heart valve for 10 years with no problems. What is the best antibiotic for prophylaxis against bacterial endocarditis? What dosage and how long should I take this?
I skipped one warfarin the night before the tooth was pulled and resumed my regular dosage the day the tooth was pulled. I have had no bleeding or pain.

Hi,
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your message.
I think I can help you.
First, the warfare stopping for 1 day might not be sufficient.
It would be better to test pt inr before a procedure.
However, since there is no bleeding , this is not an issue.

As for antibiotics , the best antibiotic remains penicillin injection.
However , for dental procedure a combination with metronidazole may be needed.

I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information contained in this message will be able to help you find the best solution for your problem. Best of luck. Dr Mittal

Thank you for your quick reply. Currently amoxicillin is being prescribed in pill form for this week following the tooth pulling. For this week is penicillin preferable? For this week is an injection one time preferable?
What is metronidazole and how does it help? How are the two medicines combined?
