Suggest An Over The Counter Medication For De-addiction Of Alcohol
Question: Dear Doctor,
I XXXXX 34 been married for 5+ years and do have 2 kids 4+ and 5 months old.
My question is on de addiction from alcohol.
As per my understanding , my husband seems to be addicted to alcohol.
Though he would not hurt me in any way but his addiction is affecting my personal life.
He has done his MBA and I guess due to his addiction he is not able to concentrate on his job and he will not be in any job more than 6 to 8 months.
I some how could manage my financial life as I am working as a software engineer with esteemed organisation.
But his addiction made me suffer hypertension in these recent days.
Though I tried giving him Ayur " NO ADDICTION", I felt little reduced with drinks for those couple of weeks, but I discontinued giving as he started making out change in the taste of food.
I even thought of taking him for de addiction centers here in XXXXXXX and he denied completely.
It's my humble request to suggest me good medicine which we get " Over The Counter " in XXXXXXX which has no side affects.
This suggestion of yours would bring back my happy days.

To the best of my knowledge there is no such OTC medication which claims to be safe in the management of alcohol de-addiction at home.
For the effective treatment he needs to be admitted in certain specialized centers like "Alcohol Anonymous" e.g Freedom foundation, High Power foundation or Treda De-addiction center in Bangaluru.
Since sudden stoppage of alcohol intake results in 'withdrawal syndrome' (anxiety, palpitation, sweating, tremors, increased heart beats or convulsions) which can make any person pretty volatile and violent , so can not be managed at home, he has be carefully monitored and treated in the hospital setting by using drugs like Chlorodiazepoxide or Clorazepate.
Once the withdrawal symptoms are controlled which may take a couple of days, he would be given drugs like Topiramate or Acamprosate or Disulfiram for de-addiction process.
Hope the suggestions given above would be useful in getting him totally "alcohol free".
