Question: My daughter is suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome and she has been prescribed Medrol, Azoran and Librax for 5 months but with no improvement .
She has just consulted another docter and she has been prescribed Cefuroxine Axetil Tablets , Flagentyl and Debridat but still with no improvement.
Can you please advise me what are the best medicines for the treatment of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Brief Answer:
Rifaximin is preferred by Gastroenterologist
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I am wondering if the diagnosis of IBS was made by Medical Gastroenterologist after thorough examination and investigations. If so dietary and lifestyle advice is still the first treatment management of IBS. Next comes the drugs plus Cognitive behavioural therapy. The drugs are preferably chosen by Gastroenterologist on the basis of symptoms and severity. Follow up with the doctor is long and so is the complete treatment. I emphasize the treatment should be undertaken only under Gastroenterologist who is trained in dealing with such patients.
The second doctor had treated with antibiotics plus IBS medicine.
Encourage your daughter the following general advice reg Diet and nutrition:
Regular meals and take time to eat.
Avoid missing meals or leaving long gaps between eating.
Drink at least eight cups of fluid per day, especially water or other non-caffeinated drinks, for example herbal teas.
Restrict coffee and tea to three cups per day.
Reduce intake fizzy drinks and alcohol
Limit intake of high-fibre food (such as wholemeal or high-fibre flour and breads, cereals high in XXXXXXX and whole grains such as brown rice).
Limit intake of resistant starch (starch that resists digestion in the small intestine and reaches the colon intact), which is often found in processed or re-cooked foods.
Limit fresh fruit to three portions per day.
People with diarrhoea should avoid sorbitol, artificial sweeteners.
People with gas and bloating may find it helpful to eat oats (such as oat-based breakfast cereal or porridge).
Hope this helps.
Follow up: Dr. Chakravarthy Mazumdar (21 hours later)
Thank you for your reply doctor.
I asked another question yesterday but did not receive any answer.
I told you that , following the treatment with Medrol , my daughter has gained weight and is suffering from joints pain and fatigue.
I wanted to know whether she would have to follow a treatment for bones or taking of calcium is enough.
I also wanted to know whether she will gain her normal weight and if yes, how long does it take to gain normal weight after a treatment of 5 months with Medrol.
Thanks

Brief Answer:
Medrol cause weight gain
Detailed Answer:
Apologies for late reply.
Short term use of Medrol is known to fluid retention and thus weight gain. Fatigue is also commonly complained. She should start looking at other weight losing changes in life to negate the effect of Medrol. Once the treatment is stopped with Medrol it takes up to 6 months to come back to normal weight. However she has to continue exercise and calorie conscious diet.
Let her continue Calcium supplements. If it is unmanageable you should get an Endocrinologist consult.
