Question: My husband recently had a pancreatic attack. He spent time in ER. and is on medication. We were not told what foods to avoid, only high fats, and no alcohol. He has type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol. A couple years ago he had a kidney stone blasted and dissolved. He is also on metformin, which everything we have been reading is a no no. He is 70 years old. He lost 25# in 2 weeks, as he was put on a clear liquid diet. We now have added eggs, cheerios, oatmeal and sugar free almond silk. Chicken and turkey the only meat, protein. No wonder he wants to sleep most of the time..no energy. He lost 2 brothers in the last year to lung cancer. So with family history, he is schedules\d to have an abdominal CT scan. Meanwhile he is very weak and hungry...HELP< HELP, advice. Yes eat smaller and more frequently...one review said lofat yogurt..while his Dr. told him NO Dairy products...

Brief Answer:
Supportive care

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Pancreatitis recent attack should be managed with supportive care. Alcohol, dehydration, spices, fatty foods, soda, beverages, processed canned foods, smoking etc all should be avoided. More fluids, soft diet and the nutrients you mentioned are fine. Metformin is not wise to use in an old man with recent pancreatitis as it can worsen GI symptoms and should be switched to some other class of oral hypoglycemics like sulfonylureas or DPPI.

Weight loss is significant though and with history of cancer in family, ASAP work up and CT abdomen along with other markers should be done to rule out any sinister pathology underneath.

I hope it helps. Take good care of your husband and of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.
