Suggest Dosage For Topiramate

Posted on Sat, 14 Jan 2017
Question: Hello,I take Topiramate,50mg,2x/day,i in morning,1 in evening originally for seizures related to stroke.It has been very effective for 20 years.I now have been seeing a ne Dr for Migraines, who doubled the dosage to prevent migraines.My question is can 100mg actually make me feel bad enough to want to discontinue or maybe reduce the dosage back to 50mg/dosage.I feel as if I am getting a type of "overdose"(headachy all the time) of the stuff to prevent Migraines,a paradox,right? So, taking matters into my own hands, last week, I cut back that dosage and have been feeling better without any increase in frequency of migraines, but it's still early. Make sense? I cannot see my Dr until late XXXXXXX as she is with a big research hospital and blah blah....(UT HARC,San XXXXXXX Tx). Thank You, XXXXXXX Fladger,{ YYYY@YYYY }

Brief Answer:
Let's continue with 50 mgx2/daily dose.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

All drugs including Topiramate can result in adverse effects besides benefits.

The general rule and common sense in using a drug is to achieve control of disease/symptoms with the minimal possible dose and few side effects.

In your case, I agree with you, since you are feeling better with the 50 mgx2 dosage and there is no increase in migraines frequency, you should continue with this dose.

If there will be increase in migraines frequency in the future, there is no point in increasing Topiramate dose since this increase results in continued headaches.

Other possible treatments may be discussed in this case.

For the moment let's continue with the actual dosage.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards.
