Suggest Effective Alternative To Sulfamethoxazole-Trimethoprim
Question: I was prescribed sulfameth-tmpds800/60 for bug bites. I do not want to take it because of the bad side effects. What would you suggest to be a better alternative?
Brief Answer:
If there is no evidence of infection antibiotic may not be needed / Amox
Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
If you have bad side effects the combination of Sulfa and Tmp, please do not take it.
If there is no evidence of infection you may not need any antibiotics as such.
If needed you may please ask for Amoxicillin. ( I think you will need a prescription for this).
With Regards.

The bites have a redness around them. Will this go away after using the ointment?
Brief Answer:
Allergy is the cause.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
The redness around the bites is usually due to the reaction to its poison and not the infection and this settles well with an antihistamine and steroid (if you are not diabetic) taken orally. Local ointment does help.
