Suggest Medical Tests To Rule Out Incomplete Abortion

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Jun 2016
Question: Hi Doctor,

I had a medical abortion three weeks back...Since then I bleed intermittently. My Gynac told to take a USG to check whether the abortion was complete or not. I had it today but the person taking the USG said there is something wrong. He did not quite specifically say what. I saw a hollow circle in one of the pictures. I am worried as to what could it be....Could it mean incomplete abortion, cyst or something more horrible.....

Brief Answer:
Mostly incomplete abortion. Upload usg report.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. Following are my comments:

1) According to your information, it is mostly suggestive of incomplete abortion or retained bits / placental tissue. It is seen following medical abortion in 5% cases.

2) I suggest to upload or attach ultrasound scan report for next management. It will be more worthwhile to understand better and help to rule out other pathology.

Hope, I have answered your query. Maintain genital hygiene properly.

I did a follow up visit to my OBGYN..He suggested another rounds of Misprostol and a USG after 7 days....I did the same..I bled for 2 days but the bleeding was not so heavy and no massive clots as such.....did a USG scan and the radiologist says still some portion is there .... I want a second opinion on the USG report....I showed to my doctor too...He said everything is fine...

My question is if everything is fine then why the radiologist said something still is there and why do I bleed only in the morning hours and then stop .....attaching the USG report

Brief Answer:
No retained bits. D & C is optional.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Dear,

Welcome back again.

Ultrasound report shows a small cyst on left ovary and thickened endometrium (12 mm). There is NO retained bits or products of conception.

It will take sometime following medical abortion to get back to normal endometrium. Otherwise, you may consult with your treating doctor for D & C.

Hope, it helps for your information. Good luck and take care.

1. is the bleeding in morning due to thickened endometrium ? Is my abortion complete ?

2. what do you suggest about the cyst ? My OBGYN said it will dissolve on its own in 2 -3 months ? Is this true ? How do you find the cyst to be ? Is it dangerous ?

3. When will I get my normal menstruation cycle again ? I am using sanitary napkins since one month and it is very frustrating to carry on like this. I want to return back to my normal life.

Brief Answer:
Abortion is completed. Period resumes within 4-6 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Dear,

Welcome back again. Followings are my comments:

1) Mild bleeding or spotting may continue for 7 to 10 days following medical abortion to resolve completely. Thickened endometrium is another cause. As per ultrasound scan report, abortion process is completed.

2) Cyst is very small and you have nothing to worry about this. It is simple type and NOT dangerous one. It will go away automatically.

3) In most cases, women resume their normal period within 4-6 weeks following medical abortion. If bleeding continues more days, you may need to take progesterone pill like Medroxyprogesterone acetate etc following consultation with your treating doctor.

Hope, it helps for your information. Maintain genital hygiene properly.
