Suggest Medication For ADHD

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Jan 2016
Question: I am wondering where I can go to find a doctor to recognize my ADHD and give me to try some low dose medication for this medical problem? I don't have a very good health insurance so I can't afford to go and see 3-4 doctors. I have to go to the right one from the very beginning. Thank you so much for any help!

Brief Answer:
Consult a psychiatrist.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to HCM.
I can understand your concerns.

I would suggest you to consult a psychiatrist for proper assessment and treatment of ADHD.

Keppra is not an appropriate drug for ADHD.

Drugs like Adderall (prescription drug) will help you to focus and control hyperactivity.

Hope this helps.
Take care.
Thanks.

Hello Dr. XXXXXXX Mehta,

I will follow your advice and see a psychiatrist.
However, you did mention Adderall as a most appropriate drug for ADHD. I know there are more drugs for ADHD than Adderall. There is Ritalin, Quillivant XR, Focalin, Daytrona,...etc. In your opinion, what strategy will be the best one to find out the right one for me without going through all of them? Thank you so much!

Brief Answer:
Depends on severity of symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
I choose the drug depending on severity of symptoms.

For me, adderall is most powerful followed by focalin followed by Ritalin.

The severity of symptoms is determined by interview with the patient, based on ADHD diagnostic criteria.

If the symptoms are disabling, I would choose adderall for you.
Otherwise, focalin would be best as it has better side effect profile and efficacy than Ritalin.

Kindly discuss this with your doctor.

Best regards.
Dr. Shubham.
