Question : Hello, I am being treated for a spider bite. Cubamycin daily IV for 2 weeks. I'm in my 1st week. My doctor wants to add Bactrim ds orally, but 40 years ago my barber use Selsun shampoo on me and my scalp and forehead broke out. What other medication could I use instead of Bactrim?

Brief Answer:
Why are you concerned about selsun?

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Selsun (sulfide) and sulfonamides(Bactrim) are distinct classes of medication and cross reaction is very rare. I don't think you have any sulfate allergy. However, we can always replace bactrim with other antibiotics.

Just to be sure, did you do any specific cultures to determine which antibiotics is best? If not, I will suggest your doctor to do so to be double sure. However, Amoxicillin-clavulate is a good drug for infected wounds following animal/insect bites as well and can be used in place of bactrim.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarification if need be.
