Suggest Post Exposure Treatment For HIV After An Unprotected Sex

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Jun 2014
Question: I am usually very safe with sex but I had unprotected sex on Tues and on Fri with the same person. We had discussed out HIV status and he told me that he was neg. He said his test was in March. Mine was in April. When I asked him about it on Fri. he seemed to get very defensive which made me feel very awkward. He always seemed to try to start sex without a condom. He showed me the results but I am still very worried. I am wondering if the early exposure treatment would be advised even though the first unprotected sex was more than 72 hours ago?

Brief Answer:
Not really indicated at this point

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for posting on HCM,

I am so sorry for your situation but be rest assured that all is not that complicated. Let me start by answering directly to your question. Post-exposure prophylaxis would not be effective after 72hours of unprotected sexual encounter. The only way to be sure that he did not expose you to HIV is by getting him to conduct a test in a common clinic (trusted). Then if he turns negative then you can be reassured that you risk less having contracted the virus. In the other hand, you will also have to stay calm and wait for another 3 months in order to redo the HIV serologic test.
Honestly, not much can be done for you now if you had been exposed but try talking calmly with him to redo his test so that you can both be clear minded.

Hope this helps

Thank you Dr. XXXXXXX
I was the top both times. The first time was very short but the second time we had sex much longer. Is the risk of infection the same? Is my risk of infection lower since I was the top right?

Brief Answer:
Position does not matter

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I understand your concern but do know that it does not matter the position but how ever certain conditions can increase risk such as wounds around your sexual organs (both), dry vagina and longer sexual episode especially with too much friction. If you are too worried, try talking things with your partner so that you may both be cleared for good.

Hope this helps
