Suggest Remedies For GERD In An Infant
My daughter is 54 days old and has been diagnosed with GERD and reflux. When she was on Rantac syrup for two weeks she was fine .once we felt she was ok we stopped . but after two days she again felt severe discomfort and her doc has put her back on rantac. My question is for how long we can give rantac ? What r other remedies for her condition?
Rantac has been prescribed by pediatrition only. Let me know if there r any natural remidies?
Rantac can be given for a week, help her to get burps
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Health Care Magic.
I really appreciate your concern for your daughter.
My answer will be bit long but it is required to explain you about other remedies.
GERD and reflux in such a small baby might be related to swallowing of air during feeding or over feeding.
Oesophageal sphincter has not yet fully developed at this age so distension of stomach either due to gas or over feeding can lead to refulx.
Since she responded well to Rantac previously so I would advise you to continue it for a week and help her to get burps after every feed by any of these ways.
1.On the chest or shoulder
Hold your baby against your chest so her chin is resting on your shoulder. Support her with one hand and gently XXXXXXX or rub her back with the other.
2.Sitting on your lap
Sit your baby on your lap facing away from you. Use one hand to support his body, the palm of your hand supporting his chest while your fingers gently support his chin and jaw. (Make sure you're not putting your fingers around his throat.) Lean your baby slightly forward and gently XXXXXXX or rub his back with your other hand
3.Face down across your lap
Lay your baby face down on your legs so she's lying across your knees, perpendicular to your body. Support her chin and jaw with one hand. Make sure your baby's head isn't lower than the rest of her body, so blood doesn't rush to her head. XXXXXXX or rub her back with the other hand.
When using any burping method, give up or try a different position if you don't get a burp after a few minutes.
Multivitamin and zinc supplement can be added to Rantac.
Hope this helps her, Rantac should not be prescribed to infants for longer period of time. so it doesn't improve with burping method and Rantac than you need to see paediatrician again for further evaluation to rule out rare condition known as Hypertrophic pyloris stenosis.
Meanwhile you can give her Rantac for next week and review after that.
Hope I could answer your question please feel free to ask for follow up question, I will be happy to help you.
Best wishes
My daughter is responding well with so her doctor has asked us to continue that till we introduce solid food around 4 months. Another problem i am facing now is even though she takes feeds its only for around 4-5 min after that she wants to drink but she is not ablebto drink due to the gas. What can be done at that time?
Can we introduce kind of semi soild food for her now ?
No, you shouldn't introduce semi solid food

Hello
Welcome again and thanks for the follow up question.
continue with rantac until she feels comfortable,
I would advise you not to give her, anything other than breastfeeding. Don't give her anything to drink after feed. She doesn't require anything other than breast milk at this age.
You should not start semi solid food for as of now. Give her small and frequent feeds.
I am sure burping will definitely help her in relieving GERD and reflux.
Hope I could answer your question. Please feel free to ask if you have any more queries, I will happily answer you.
Best wishes
