Brief Answer:
Possible Hiatal Hernia

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using HCM to post your health query.
I read carefully your question and I understand your concern.

Food and mucus are obviously coming from the stomach, but I see you haven't had stomach issues before.

Here are my thoughts and advises:
-- Eat and drink small amounts of food (but its ok to eat more often).
-- Elevate the head side of your bed higher then the feet, by putting something on the bed legs for example, or use 2 cushions.
-- Take an antiacid like Omeprazole 20 mg, or Lansoprazole 15 mg, or Pantoprazole 40mg. Take any of them once/day for 2 weeks.
-- So what it is happening it is that the food from the stomach comes in the mouth. Part of it may go to the lungs and cause coughing. This is called gastric reflux. If it is not getting better after 2 weeks of using the measures above, or if its getting worse, then you will need to do an ultrasound or a fibrogastroscopy to rule out Hiatal Hernia, which is the sliding of the stomach though the diaphragmatic hole into the chest. The pressure from the small stomach causes the reflux.

Hope this is helpful.
