The main symptoms are feeling very sad, crying a lot, feeling inadequate and low self esteem, thinking that no one around me cares about me. Having a hard time concentrating at work, losing interest in my work.
These symptoms developed a few weeks ago when I had an argument with my husband and my mom was around. In this argument about my son's behavior, he proceeded to berate me and effectively blame me for his behavior. My mom piled on as well and I think something inside me must have snapped. I have been very sad and angry since then. I get up in the middle of the night often and cannot go back to sleep. I am a very strong and successful mom and professional I thought.
Aggravating factors include my son leaving to College, husband's constant belittling remarks that I learned to tone out, or thought I did, unsupportive mom who has been visiting for a while, pressure at work, a teenage son at home who is acting up to show XXXXXXX Also, I found out last week that I have high marker for heart disease even though I am very fit and in good physical health generally.
I have never sought mental help as I have always been in control and managed to relieve my stress by excercising and finding interesting things to do. Please help.

This could be due to adjustment disorder.

Hello again and thanks for providing details
Since these symptoms developed only few weeks ago so we can't classify these symptoms as depressive disorder but yes the symptoms are classical depressive symptoms only.
Persistently low mood, crying spells, feeling of inadequacy, poor self esteem, feeling that no one cares about you, poor focus, lack of interest in work or anhedonia are symptoms of depression. Since there are many factors like things related to your son, lack of support from mother, not very good behaviour of husband and recent fight at home etc are contributing to depression so most likely your symptoms are occurring due to Adjustment disorder with depressive symptoms. Persistent stress is resulting in such symptoms.
First of all try to find out the positive things in your present life and around you. Avoid thinking about negative things again and again. Don't give undue importance to negatives around you. If your son is not doing good then try to make him understand that what is right for him and what is wrong for him. With time you will start feeling better.
Eat healthy food and balanced diet to stay healthy. Exercise daily and this will keep you distracted. If even after lifestyle changes the lack of motivation persists then visit a psychiatrist for evaluation.
Low dose SSRI drugs can help to treat these depressive symptoms due to adjustment disorder. Just try to keep yourself busy in constructive things and you will become better.
Thanks
