Question: Thank you. I'm a 56-year-old relatively healthy Caucasian male with history of cardiac disease with three stents placed in 2010 put in during heart procedure in large part as s result three decades of very very stressful work and some unhealthy lifestyle habits including drinking and smoking both of which I've quit for over half a dozen years

In the last few months I was diagnosed with a rare type of NK T cell Lymphoma (nasal type) type, an extremely rare cancer in the last six months

I'm currently in full treatment at Sloan-Kettering Hospital with a full regimen of chemo therapy and I soon will be in radiation therapy.

Lately,I've noticed that when I hold something I

My hands have movement and shaking when holding my phone and typing on my phone or holding another small object.

From what I've read I believe it's called essential tremor.

The strange thing is that when I hold something I have the shaking my hands but when I have nothing in my hands they don't shake or quiver.

I remember XXXXXXX J Fox speaking publicly about him holding a pencil or or pen or other small object to make his hands not tremble and shake as opposed to my situation.

Can you shed any light on what could be going on with what may be going on and if this might be sensual tumor or something more serious like Parkinson's or Worse

Brief Answer:
sounds like essential tremor

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your question.
There is a fundamental difference between a Parkinson's tremor and what is called essential tremor (or benign familial tremor). In Parkinson's disease they have what is called a resting tremor. It manifests when the muscles are relaxed, but decreases or stops with movement (as when Mr. Fox holds a pen).
In essential tremor the tremor type is called an intention tremor. This means that when your muscles are active (you are moving or holding something), the tremor manifests or worsens. In this type of tremor, there may or may not be a tremor at rest.
From what you describe above, it sounds very much like you have an essential tremor and not a Parkinson's tremor.
A neurologist could confirm this for you and suggest treatment if it is interfering with your life and function.
I wish you the best,
Dr. Robinson
