Suggest Remedies For Gonorrhea While On Azithromycin

Question: Hello,

I was diagnosed with gonorrhea back at the beginning of December. When I went to see my GP, he made me take a double dose of azithromycin which I was told was typically used to treat chlamydia.

Four days later after I was given this antibiotic, I felt severe pressure on my bladder, and burning in my urethra and my GP prescribed sulfatrim for a UTI. The symptoms worsened while taking this. Then he prescribed cipro, and again they worsened during this treatment.

I decided to go to emergency at the local hospital. The doctor there did a pelvic exam, internal and external ultrasound, urine and blood samples. He then said he suspected I had Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and prescribed something relating to the penicillin family (it was two pills) not sure of the exact name. He also prescribed a two week dose of both doxycycline and metronidazole. The first week after that, I felt great! Back to normal and was so thankful. However slowly the pressure and burning came back.

I was back in emergency two times in the same week and nothing would come up in my urine samples or blood tests. They even did an extremely uncomfortable urethral swab. The gynecologist who is a resident gave me naproxen and pyridium which actually seemed to irritate it more.

The last time I was in emergency they said nitrites came up in my urine sample and she prescribed me macrobid as well as elmiron as they also suspected I might have Interstitial Cystitis. Well day three of taking these meds I could actually sit comfortably and was doing so much better. However today, day four, I'm getting burning in the urethra again and pain in the lower part and to the left of my abdominal area.

I am really hoping and praying I don't have interstitial cystitis as I'm only 25 and I hear it's a life altering diagnosis. I also recently stopped eating meat and don't know if this would cause anything like this. I will be going back for a cystoscopy soon I think, but just wanting to know if anyone has any advice or medical opinions to offer me.

Thank you,

Chelsie

Brief Answer:
Proper treatment with antibiotics would resolve the problem.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. You have pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), an infection in the pelvic region irrespective of the origin. All the mentioned treatment is intended for the same. Interstitial cystitis is just a part of the same ailment. It is just a form of urinary tract infection (UTI). The urinary bladder is a part of the pelvis as well as the lower urinary tract. Needless to say that UTI would extend to the bladder. The bladder infection is known as cystitis. Interstitial cystitis is a form of cystitis or UTI or PID. You need not get apprehensive as proper treatment should provide relief.

Let me know if I could help further.
