Suggest Remedies For Loss Of Eyelashes Due To Alopecia Areata

Posted on Mon, 13 Feb 2017
Question: Our daughter's eyelashes started falling from her upper lids in the beginning of XXXXXXX 2016. Until recently that was the only problem she had but despite our efforts doctors in Bulgaria were unable to help her lashes grow again. A month ago her eylashes started falling from her lower lids and also she began losing her hairs in the eyebrows. Her hair
is still ok but very thin though. All her blood tests are normal - she's healthy. We've done hormones - their level is ok. We've applied maxidex for two and a half months on the lids and we've been applying maxidex on the eyebrows and tobradex on the eyelids for almost twenty days now. Some small lashes and hairs seem to start growing but still she doesn't have eyelashes. Everything we've done so far has been assigned from different doctors in Bulgaria - ophtalmologists and dermatologists. She has taken multivitamins and she has increased her body weight a lot so we stopped giving her vitamins. We hope you can help us. Thank you!

Brief Answer:
Alopecia areata

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I am dr.kakkar (dermatologist). I have gone through your query and I have viewed the Images

She definitely seems to have alopecia areata (focal), as suggested by the history and also visible in the Images.
Alopecia areata is most commonly characterised by localised patches of hair loss which is sudden in onset. These patches may occur anywhere, most commonly on scalp but also on eyebrows and even eyelashes. Sometimes there may be total loss of scalp hair (alopecia totalis) or entire body (alopecia universalis).
Though alopecia areata may reverse on its own I would suggest you to use Bimatoprost solution (0.03%) for local application. Though this drug is used for glaucoma by ophthalmologists, it has also been shown to be effective for eyelid alopecia areata. I suggest that you talk to your dermatologist regarding this.

Thank you very much! And what can I apply on the eyebrows? Or should I just leave them like this? Right now I'm applying maxidex - that's dexametasone.
