Question: My mother is suffering from frequent sprains. These sprains occur mostly at the thighs, ankles and around the knees. What can be done to stop this?

On applying iodex, she feels relief for a day.

She does not walk much. She climbs a set of stairs as our house is in 1st Floor. But this has always been the case.

Brief Answer:
Rule out arthritis...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

As per your description, the symptoms of pain are around the knee joint. Have you noticed if the pain is on one knee or both knee.

At this age (52) when woman are close to or already attained menopause, they are more predisposed to osteoarthritis. This condition can explain her symptoms. A physical examination and X-ray of the affected knee is important to understand the status of her current knee.

If the pain is severe, she can take locally available (over the counter) pain medications. Along with it I will also recommend calcium supplements and the tests I mentioned above.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarifications.

Regards
