Suggest Remedies For Running Nose And Nasal Drainage

default
Posted on Sat, 13 Aug 2016
Question: I have what I consider minimal sinus/allergy problems. I do live in Hannibal, MO on the Mississippi RIver. (female age 68) My only and most annoying symptom has been a runny nose. It seemed I always had a kleenex in my hand. So a friend of mine said I should just maybe take a zyrtec daily, so I did start that, (about 2 years ago) and the runny nose as well as the kleenexes disappeared! Anyway, I find that my nasal passages continue to have "bugers"(misp?)and I am wiping my inside my nostrils with a kleenex each morning. Not alot, but I can "feel" it. I am wondering if switching to a nasal spray would be a better option. IF I ever have any further discomfort, it always seems to feel like it is in my nasal passages. Sometimes, it's like I can feel a "glob" kinda in the back of my throat that I can't seem to get out. Then sometimes, after I blow a few attempts, then alot will come out. These are my only symptoms and none are chronic. Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible.

First of all, it is sad to know what you had gone through. Based on the history you have shared, it seems as if the exact cause of all these symptoms is allergic but infective etiology also needs to be ruled out.

To start with you need to be examined by an ENT specialist and get examined thoroughly to look inside the nose for any polyp or deviated nasal septum which is causing the recurrent symptoms and troubles which you are facing.

Using anti histamines like cetirizine as you are using already may help with the symptoms and long term usage may be needed. But combined with medications like Monteleukast sodium for long term can be associated with decreased frequency of such episodes.

If signs of infection present clinically or on an X-ray Para-nasal sinuses, a course of antibiotics like Co-Amoxyclav or Azithromycin may he helpful for a better outcomes(you'll be needing prescription by your local doctor to get these).

Using steam inhalations and nasal decongestant sprays as you have mentioned which dilates the nasal passages and facilitates air way is indeed associated with even better outcomes.

Keep away firm direct exposure to cold and use low fat diets.
Wishing you a speedy recovery. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
Regards. .
