Suggest Remedies For Running Nose, Watery Eyes And Postnasal Drip

Posted on Mon, 8 Aug 2016
Question: My daughter has had allergies for many years and has taken Zyrtec with decent results until lately. I have heard that allergies are particularly bad this year due to climate changes. In the past, she has tried other OTC antihistamines but didn't feel them to be as effective as Zyrtec. Would she benefit from a nasal spray? Her symptoms include runny nose, watery eyes, postnasal drip.

Brief Answer:
Yes, she will definitely improve with nasal spray.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
By your history and description, possibility of allergic rhinitis is more with your daughter.
And best treatment for allergic rhinitis is intranasal spray containing steroids (fluticasone).
So you should definitely start fluticasone nasal spray in your daughter.
Also continue zyrtec tablet.
You should also identify causative allergens in her case so that she can avoid them.
Identification of allergen and avoidance of it are also very helpful in such cases.
So you should definitely start steroidal nasal spray in your daughter.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

Aren't there lots of troublesome side effects with steroidal nasal sprays, though? I read about bronchospasms or nasal congestion associated with them and get scared about my daughter trying such agents.

Thank you for your reply. You asked my daughter's age. She is 30. Also, I forgot to mention that her eyes are always red. She was given Patanol at one time but that didn't help. Long ago, she was tested for allergies so she knows which allergens are causing her problems. She went through allergy shots as a child, but we didn't notice much difference. Any suggestions about something for her bloodshot eyes? Her blood pressure is fine, in case you wondered.

This might be due to allergic conjunctivitis.

Her red eyes are mostly due to allergic conjunctivitis.
And for this she needs antihistamine and anti allergic eyedrops.
Please let me know
1. Is she having itching of eyes?
2. Is she having watering from eyes?
3. Are eyes symptoms worsen with nose symptoms?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better. I will be happy to help you further. Wishing good health to your daughter. Thanks.
