Suggest Remedies For Severe Cough While On Benzonatate

Question: I take benzonatate 100 mg every eight hours. So far it has done nothing to reduce my coughing at all.
I cough so much that I get no sleep. Why is this not working?

Thank you for using HCM to post your question.
I read it carefully and I understand your concern.

Benzonatate is used for dry cough.
So if you have had pneumonia, I would think that your cough is with sputum. My recommendation is to add another medicine for the cough which will help soften the secretions and so relieve the cough. In general I advise my patients to take Syrup Bromhexine 5-10ml (8mg) thrice daily for next 4-5 days and observe.
Also drink plenty of fluids, do steam therapy and foods rich in vit C.

If not better, I would suggest to see again your doctor so s/he can check you again to make sure that pneumonia has been treated completely.
