Suggest Remedies For Severe Hair Loss In A 54 Year Old Female

default
Posted on Fri, 3 Jun 2016
Question: I am frightened at the amt of hair I have lost over the past 18 mos or so. I am a 54 yr old female, 2 of my sisters have thin hair also, where the hair not only thins out on top but also becomes like fine straw, so you can't do a thing with it. so i know it much be genetic of some sort. I just want to do EVERYTHING i can to keep as much as possible and as healthy as poss. it is becoming straw-like. :-( i take biotin each day, my doc says i was not anemic last blood work. i also have been putting on rogaine, men's 5% now that i am older and beyond child bearing age i figure mens is ok and it's cheaper. i bought the comb that supposed to help keep scalp active and awake, but is there anything different i can be doing? its a very stressful problem and everything i see is for men. i dont' think i have enough hair in back to do any type of transplanting program sadly. is there anything?

Brief Answer:
Check thyroid profile and female hormone panel

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I would like to mention that most of the approaches to help hair regeneration and prevent hair loss have been advised to you.

But I would although like to pay emphasis on the fact that the cause could be related to a thyroid abnormality, and would like you to check with your sisters whether any of them have been diagnosed with any thyroid-related abnormalities. Also, check with your doctor to see if he/she has checked your thyroid profile.

If not, then you should know that an underachieve thyroid is one of the most common causes for hair thinning in women of all ages. So please do check on this along with other factors. If an abnormality is found, correction can prevent hair loss and also prevent progression of any hair related problems. This along with a check on your hormone levels, will help a lot with diagnosis and management accordingly.

I hope you find my response helpful. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
