Suggest Remedies For Severe Toothache Post A Root Canal Treatment

default
Posted on Fri, 27 Jan 2017
Question: I had a root canal yesterday and the dentist did NOT prescribe me any meds. I was a 10 on the pain scale last night. I have hydrocodone for migraines but I need something stronger. The root canal took 3 hours and he told me it didn't look good as far as saving the tooth. I called today to get something to relieve pain and he said only hydrocodone was the only thing he could prescribe. I said I have that, I need mepargan. He refused and told me to take Tylenol. I am in INTENSE pain that was no problem when I awoke this morning. However, I had to use the tooth to eat since I don't have any teeth on the other side and since it has bothered me. Is a dentist limited to what they can prescribe?

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

As per your query, there is no limitation to give painkillers by Dentist but Mepargan is not commonly given in toothache..

If there is moderate pain, painkillers like Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Tylenol, Diclofenac etc are advised..

If pain is severe then Ketorolac, Tramadol, Hydrocortisone etc are advised..

I would first of all like to know, do you have any medical problems other than migraine or are you on any regular medication ?
Any known allergies ?
Is there swelling also present along with pain ?

Yes, I was hit by a car and then run over in August. I know when I'm seriously in pain. I have a bottle of tramadol and doesn't do squat

Brief Answer:
You can take the Tramadol.

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome back..

You can take Tramadol and do cool compresses over the cheek..

You should eat soft foods to avoid pressure over the tooth that can trigger pain..

You can also consult Emergency medical services/Urgent Care and ask for painkiller injection for faster relief along with a course of Oral antibiotics.

In case, if pain does not gets better and if tooth is not in a good position to be saved then better go for extraction of tooth..

Hope this helps..

Regards..

WHAT PART OF THE TRAMADOL DON'T DO SHIT DO U NOT UNDERSTAND. ALSO, THE I DON'T HAVE FUCKING INSURANCE!!! WHAT IS UR PROBLEM.

Brief Answer:
You have to see an Emergency service, and you don't need to have Insurance for ER/Urgent care visits

Detailed Answer:
In case if Tramadol is also not working for the pain then no other option, other than consulting an Emergency service or your Dentist at the earliest as higher regimen of painkillers are strictly prescription based medications and cannot be given without a written script by a doctor/ dentist..

However, since hydrocodone and tramadol is failed to control the pain, you have to visit your nearest E.R/Urgent Care for immediate pain relief, it's a part of Emergency Medical care for which you don't need to have Insurance..

Also, if tooth is showing poor prognosis, then extraction of tooth is the only option left..

Hope this helps..

Regards.

Wrong, I visited the er last year and the collection agencies are still calling. I appreciate your advice, however, I am not the average patient. I explained to the dentist in September that zpac was the only antibiotic that would work as I was allergic to penicillin and their cousins when he pulled a tooth. He STILL wrote it for something totally different. Had a BAD reaction, wasted $20 and he ended up writing an rx for zpac. Therefore, when a patient knows what works, anything else is just a waste of money, my money.

located in XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome back..

I can understand your concerns related to past bad experiences with the medical services and in case if you already indicated about the Allergic reaction, you should not be given the Allergic medication.

Also please let me know, if taking Mepargan in the past for pain relief was helpful in relieving pain ?

Brief Answer:
You can take Mepargan after consulting E.R.

Detailed Answer:
Hi..
Welcome back..

If Mepargan helped with severe pain in the past then you can get it prescribed and take for relieving your severe toothache..

But again I would like to tell you that for permanent resolution you need to consult a Dentist or Endodontist and get the tooth evaluated so that appropriate treatment can be done..

Hope this helps..
