Advises on how to avoid having Shin Splints.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for using HCM to post your health question.
I read your query and I understand your concern.
Shin Splints are caused by overuse of the legs which may irritate the muscles, make them swollen, sometimes it may cause stress fracture (tiny breaks of the lower legs bones).
So, since we know the cause we can know how to eliminate the shin splints from happening:
-- Tell your mother to stop running/ overusing her legs and to rest until the inflamed tissues will heal. It may take 4-6 weeks.
-- Apply ice locally in the place that hurts or where there is swelling- 20-30 minutes every 3 to 4 hours for 2 to 3 days, or until the pain is gone.
-- Take a pain killer, regularly for 2 weeks.
-- Use orthopedic shoes, or shoes that make her more comfortable.
-- Consider a seeing a physical therapist which will give her exercises to keep the range of motion and strengthen the muscles.
Also, one important thing to keep in mind it is to control the blood sugar. both the fasting sugar and the post fasting sugar are a bit higher than normal. Your mother will need to do the HbA1C to check how was her diabetes the last 3 months and if higher she will need to increase the dose of the medications.
Hope this is helpful and that I answered your question.
