Suggest Remedies For Sunburns On Skin

Posted on Tue, 22 Mar 2016
Question: Can my sunburnt skin go back to normal after unprotected sunbathing of just a day? My chest is no longer red but has a goosebump texture and my hands are still discoloured. What can I do to get this back to normal? I use sunscreen religiously now.

Brief Answer:
Pityriasis versicolor on chest and hyperpigmentation on dorsum of hands

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I have gone through your query and I have also reviewed the Images

I can see hyperpigmented spots in a follicular distribution on chest and hyperpigmentation on dorsum of hands.

I think the spots on chest are a manifestation of fungal infection, pityriasis versicolor, which can present as hyperpigmented, finely scaling patches on chest and sometimes on shoulders, back, neck etc. The fungus feeds on sebum secreted by these sebaceous gland rich areas. This infection is common in hot and humid seasons.
I would suggest you to use a antifungal shampoo e.g ketoconazole based lotion/ shampoo (Nizral 2% ) over the affected area on chest. You may use this at the time of bath, lather it well and allow it to act for 5 minutes before rinsing it off with water. Repeat this for 7 consequtive days.
The hyperpigmented patches on dorsum of hands should improve with the use of a moderately potent topical steroid cream e.g mometasone furoate 0.1% cream Or triamcinolone acetonide 0.1% cream, twice daily application.
