Brief Answer:
Can be a muscle spasm.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The indentation on the muscle and a knotty feel can be due to a muscle spasm or a muscle tear. Even if there is no bruise it is best to ice the area and take an oral muscle relaxant.
In case there is a visible swelling then do consult a physician. Otherwise it will subside on its own in 1-2 weeks.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.

Can be due to muscle stiffness.

Hello.

The knots can happen due to muscle stiffness. It will resolve after doing a regular hot compress. Knots are not normal but these do resolve with time.
