Suggest Remedy For Constipation Post Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Nov 2015
Question: I am 37 years old and had a total robotic laproscopic hysterectomy back in August. I can no longer have a bowel movement on my own, changed my diet and started taking prescription constipation meds. I never had this issue in the past. I also have hypothyroidism that I've had since I was 21 years old. The constipation is so bad that at times I cannot even urinate. My emotions are a mess, my hair is falling out in clumps, I have weighed 160 in August and now I am over 200 lbs. I am a very active person, I work in an extremely high pace, and demanding job that I love. I've never experienced acne as a teen. I have acne all over my face, chest, back and neck. My joints and muscles are constantly painful. I cannot concentrate or remember things like I used to. At times I have heart palpitations and get dizzy. I am constantly hot, very seldom that I am hot. I do not wear a coat unless its under 30 degrees out and I cannot drink or eat hot foods or it increases the heat. I feel like I am erratic at times, jumping out of my skin and crying a lot (all new symptoms since the hysterectomy). My surgeon said that my surgical sites and healing is great. I cannot loose a pound. I am only 5 feet tall and NEVER EVER BEEN THIS HEAVY!! I am miserable, can you please lead me in the right direction.

Brief Answer:
You may need some investigations.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

The symptoms from your history can happen due to hormonal problems. I would like to ask wether your ovaries are conserved or not? Getting progesterone and estrogen level done could help to rule out the cause of hotness ,hair problem etc

Constipation sometime can occur post surgery. But if it is for prolonged time, other factors should be ruled out like poor diet, stress, electrolytes imbalance, etc.
I would also like to ask ,when was the last time you checked your thyroid profile. Since some time dose of medicines has to be adjusted according to test report.
I would also like to suggest electrolytes test to be done with sugar level to just rule out the cause of gastroparesis.

Otherwise taking fibres, lots of fruits and vegetables and starting exercise daily would also help along with medicines.

In a nutshell, I recommend that you discuss about the various tests I mentioned above with your treating doctor. We might be able to get to the bottom of this problem through these tests.

Hopefully my answer will be helpfull, pls let me know, if I need to clarify further.

Regards,
Dr.Maheshwari
