Suggest Remedy For Cough And Throat Irritation In A Child

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Jul 2015
Question: Right before Christmas we got two kittens. Within two weeks, my 7 year old daughter began to have sinus issues that resulted in her having a sort of cough and throat irritation where she constantly has to clear her throat. She also has problems wetting the bed. It's almost like she cannot wake up in the middle of the night to pee.

Over a month ago, I removed the kittens from our house because I thought perhaps my daughter was allergic to them. She is fine and doesn't have to constantly clear her throat until she eats. It doesn't matter what she eats she constantly has to try to clear her throat .

My husband wonders if enlarged adnoids and tonsils can be hereditary because he had terrible sleep apnea as a child and they attributed his bed wetting, delayed growth, and slow metabolism (holding onto weight even though eating healthy)? Our daughter also holds onto weight even though we eat healthy (no sugar or processed foods) but she is not overweight.

What are your thoughts?

Brief Answer:
Persistent adenoids and transient aspiration of food...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query and an elaborate history.

After going through the query thoroughly, I do understand your daughter could be still continuing to have nasal block and mouth breathing due to persistent hypertrophied adenoids.

The children who are sensitive to environmental allergens develop nose block due to hypertrophy of the adenoids and clogged secretions. This holds good in your child's case also.

Even after removal of the triggering factor, she still continues to have constant clearing of the throat, is because of transient aspiration of the food contents secondary to mouth breathing.

I strongly feel, she would require steroid nasal spray and regular steam inhalation to reduce the size of the hypertrophied adenoids and alleviation of the symptoms.

Hence, consult your doctor for a complete evaluation and further management.

Hope I have answered your query; I'll be available for the follow up queries.
