Suggest Remedy For Cough When On Diovan

Posted on Mon, 17 Nov 2014
Question: I took diovan for around 5 years. I developed a cough and fits of sneezing so at my cardiologist' suggestion I discontinued Diovan. The sneezing has stopped but I still have a cough. How long should it take for the cough to end if it was caused by Diovan?

Brief Answer:
Has there been a change in the cough?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

Valsartan(Diovan) causes dry cough and this is well documented. This could have been the cause of your cough. However, if this were for real the cause, you should have noticed a significant improvement in this cough since stopping the drug. If this has been the case, then this was the most likely cause of the cough. But, if it has not changed, we may want to investigate other causes of chronic cough.

Cough after stopping Diovan may take several months before ever disappearing fully. In some persons, it never ever get to subside fully but symptoms no longer remain bothersome. If your symptoms are no longer bothersome that they interrupt you sleep, days' activities, etc, I will recommend that you do not seek further medical attention just now on this and continue with watchful waiting. If this is not the case, talk to your doctor for other possible causes of chronic cough like gastric reflux disease, postnasal drip, etc to be investigated.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
