Suggest Remedy For Damage To Vocal Cord During Intubation

Question: Hi. I am a 52 yr old female with epilepsy. About 3 weeks ago I was taken to the ER and intubated. I wasonly intubated for approx 36hrs. In the hospital I was told I had vocal chord damage from intubation. Is this the same as paresis? The E N T told me it wasn't paralyzed but damaged. I can barely speak. I am getting brave on what I eat but forget liquids. I have to use thickener. They gave me no further instruction on what to do. I was a resp nurse for 7 yrs so I know they paralyze the pt before intubation. I feel that this was strong human error. What do you think. I am frustrated and am dying for a cup of coffee. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Vocal cord damage is the broad term

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam,
I have gone through your query; and for your kind information vocal cord damage is the broad term it includes mucosal lacerations, haematoma, subluxation of arytenoid cartilage, paresis of vocal cord and paralysis of vocal cord.

If you have history of hoarseness of voice then I personally advise course of steroid if not contraindicated, and if you suffering from the aspiration then go for the ryles tube insertion for some days or take a liquid and solid diet in sitting position patiently.

Wish you good health.
