Posted on Mon, 11 May 2015
Question: I am visiting my daughter-in-law and she is going through menopause, age 51. She has been extremely dizzy all day along with a subtle headache accompaning the dizziness ( she feels like she is going round & round). Could her symptoms be due to menopause? Oh, she also just started her period after months of not having one.

Brief Answer:
Not a common presentation of menopause

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Irregularity in menses , hot flashes, mood changes, vaginal dryness, recurrent vaginal infections due to increased vaginal PH, are the common symptoms associated with menopause. At least 3 months of amenorrhea with elevated gonadotropins i.e FSH and LH are required to diagnose menopause. Hormone replacement therapy can be considered if its Menopause. Dizziness can be used in describing two different subjective feelings.
Lightheadedness indicating that you are about to faint or are on the verge of a black out. The symptoms you described fit vertigo, more. These can be related to the menopause but could be an isolated neurologic issue as well.
Vertigo is a feeling that you or your surroundings are in movement when there is no actual movement by either. Pre syncope or lightheadedness requires more of a cardiac workup whereas vertigo requires a neurological workup. Blood pressure to rule out hypotension or hypertension and metabolic profile including Blood sugar ( for hypoglycemia ) and electrolytes ( for electrolyte imbalance ) also needs to be checked. Betahistine dihydrochloride 16 mg or prochlorperazine for symptomatic relief can be advised initially.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
