Suggest Remedy For Dysuria After Intercourse

Question: Hi, I had unprotected sex on the weekend, and by monday was having pain when urinating. I went to the doctor and they prescribed my macrobid for a UTI. I have been on it for 2 days and no longer have painful urination. My partner has a history of chlamydia and just has informed me that he is urinating more frequently and experiencing some pain and believes it to be chlamydia. I just went to get tested for both chlamydia and gonorrhea, but if I had either wouldn't my symptom of painful urination still be ongoing? Does macrobid treat either or just UTI's?

Brief Answer:
Macrobid can suppress symptoms even if you have gonorhoea or chlamydia

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Macrobid (active ingredient nitrofurantoin) is an antibiotic that is very effective in treating UTIs, but it cannot help to treat either chlamydia or gonorrhoea.

There could be 2 reason why you seem to be experiencing a suppression of your painful urination:

1. May you do not have either of those STDs, and just have a simple UTI

2. The macrobid could be helping to suppress the symptoms of the infection, but will not treat the infection completely, resulting in recurrences of the symptoms and infection, as and when it is aggravated

The usual medications used to treat gonorrhoea and/or chlamydia are azithromycin and/or doxycycline orally, and ceftriaxone injections. Please do speak to your doctor about the test results and you make changes to the treatment regimen accordingly.

I hope you find my response helpful. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
