Suggest Remedy For Flushed Face When On Nystatin And Triamcinolone
Question: My mother is 87 years old. She woke up with a flushed face, and still has it tonight. She has been taking nystatin & triamcinolone 60 g which she started in XXXXXXX 29, Feb. 13, and Feb. 28 th. There are 2 tubes in the package. She is bed bound due to orthopedic problems, broken hip, shattered leg, etc. and only gets in the wheelchair to see the doctor or get her hair done. She does have a PT who comes to the house, but he just does bed exercises. She also has been using cortisone 1% & a new aide was using the cortisone cream like body lotion last Sun. since my mother said that she was itchy. Yesterday I took mother to the urologist & he asked about her medications & I mentioned the nystatin. He said not to use too much cortisone since the nystatin had cortisone. She also takes coumedin 2mg, omnaprozole twice a day and metoprolol tartr 50 mg once a day. This flushed face is unusual should I talk to the dermatologist, geriatrician, internist, or take her to the emergency room. She is saying she is OK, but she says that she is tired. She has been saying that for about 2 weeks now. What do you think? Thanks!

Tonight she still has the flushed face & now starting to be painful. I did speak to the dermatologist who did not have any real advice. She had me take her temperature which was normal & asked about her blood pressure. Her pulse was 88 this morning, but was 74 this afternoon. She also has had melanoma of the face on her left cheek which was operated back in 2005. Both cheeks are flushed, but the left one is worse. She also told me this afternoon that she put some makeup on her face on Thursday since she went to the doctor. Friday morning is when she woke up with the flushed cheeks. She is sleeping now. I had read on line that cortisone can cause flushing and thought the combination between 1% cortisone and the nystatin could have caused a hydrocortisone overdose resulting in the flushing, but I am even more concerned if it is starting to hurt. Please advise. Thanks!

You can rule out drug induced flushing by reducing or temporarily stopping the medicine to see if there is improvement in the symptoms. If yes then dose adjustment/alternate medicine would be required. If it does not improve then further workup would be required under the supervision of a "Consultant Medical Specialist". He might advise MRI-Spine to see if there is any problem in the autonomic nervous system resulting in flushing. Meanwhile following measures will help to reduce the pain intensity:
- naproxen twice a day
- ice packing face
