Suggest Remedy For High Blood Sugar In A 3 Year Old

default
Posted on Fri, 12 Sep 2014
Question: Dear doctor,

Around 10 days back my daughter aged 3.5 years old had continuous fever of around 102 degrees(for almost 2 days and did not subside even after giving meftal).

Doctor prescribed some medicines along with paracetamol injection and after 3-4 days she is perfectly fine.

As part of diagnosis lots of blood tests, chest xray including tests for Dengue/Typhoid were taken and all turned out to be negative..

Only one thing noticed that was not normal or above limit is her "random blood sugar".
I am attaching the report showing the same.

Please check and let us know if we need to be concerned about this and whether we need to repeat the test again.

Please let us know why will kids have high blood sugar. Does it mean they are diabetic?

Brief Answer:
Normal

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to healthcare magic.
First random blood sugar is done to rule out low sugar in children.
In your child it is slightly high but can be considered normal.
Usually fever stresses the liver to produce more sugar from stored glycogen, which may be the reason why the value was slightly high
No need to worry.

Your child is not diabetic
High sugars ( more than 200 ) do occur but they will have other symptoms like vomiting, acidosis and will be sicker at presentation and sugar levels will not normalise without insulin (((( DIabetic Ketoacidosis ))))
Let me know if you need further help
Regards

DR Arun
