Brief Answer:
Blood test needs to be done to see if antibiotic can be omitted

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I am sorry to hear about your child.

The temperature definitely needs to be kept in control. Paracetamol needs to be given at a minimum interval of 3-4 hours. You can also give tepid sponging. If the temperature is still not controlled you may give Meftal P syrup (contains mefenamic acid) which is more effective than paracetamol in reducing temperature. But it is a prescription medicine and you would need to get it prescribed by your treating physician.

Most of such fevers are due to viral infection where antibiotics are not effective. Since the child is not tolerating the antibiotic, there are three things that can be done.

* The first is to switch to the intravenous form of the antibiotic (or a similar antibiotic). In that case you would need to get the child admitted.
* The second is to get a routine blood count done (if not done already). If the WBC count is not high, it is unlikely to be due to a bacterial infection (an antibiotic can be effective in a bacterial infection) and so the antibiotic can be omitted.
* The third is to give some antiemetic like Ondansetron 15-30 mins before the dose and then give the dose of the antibiotic.

You would have to choose from the above three options. Please talk to your doctor about these options.

Hope that helps.
