Question: Dear doctor,

My 5 month old baby boy had been very irritable lately..every night before he sleep, he will cry uncontrollably. Those cry are screams and heart aching to hear ... And he finally falls to sleep after crying tired ..
There seemed no issues on his feeding and diapers? Pee and passing motion had been normal. He usually sleep thru the night except for hunger cries in the wee hours of the morning. After waking up ,. He felt good and playful but after awhile he will feel irritable again.

Pls advise

Brief Answer:
It can be colic, mood change or GERD

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Intermittent excessive crying in a well grown,active/playful baby who is feeding well can be due to various reasons.
Apart from hunger cry,wet nappy one should rule out abdominal colic,GERD and teething.Irritability is a common manifestation of a moody child to display his emotions.
A persistent irritable child should be evaluated by a pediatrician to rule out any diseased condition by clinical examination.
In the case the clinical examination is normal and irritability is persistent some medicines for colic/GERD can help.
I would suggest you to cuddle the baby and try to nurse him to alleviate his irritabilty.
I shall get him evaluated by a pediatrician for direct clinical examination to rule out any alarming condition(although it seems to be very unlikely as the child is playful and active in between) and discuss about the need of medications for colic/GERD.
I will be glad to answer if you have any more queries
Regards
