Question: Hello Dr XXXXXXX
This is about my son. He is studying in 8th std. There are many problems that we had started to see with him as he grows older. Basically he is so lazy, not at all enthusiastic in life. He just wanted to simply sit and watch TV and play the same car game in the computer and do nothing else. He even does not like to move with neighboring boys or with his class mates. He is so afraid of the fellow boys and so he doesn't even move or talk with him and even to the close relatives (Grandma, Grandpa etc) as well. I had tried to talk to him to understand what he wants to do but he does not open up.
So as parents, how do we make him as active, out going, bold and smart person? Please advice.

Brief Answer:
Behavioral modification techniques will help

Detailed Answer:

Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic. Although you posted the query for Dr. XXXXXXX I am answering the question because it was posted on an open forum where Dr. XXXXXXX might not have been available.

Unfortunately the problem that you are facing is not unique for your child and faced my numerous parents these days. Your child is happy doing a certain set of things and does not feel any requirement to be concerned about other things. You need to get him involved.

Certain behavioral modification techniques need to be applied and I strongly insist that you visit a child psychologist and get his help. You need a deeper involvement from your side and the child psychologist can help you to analyze the situation better and would also devise you simple games to play with your child at home, but that would take care of the greater picture. You can tell your child that it is just to help him to cope better with his environment. Please do not scold your child or use other methods of negative reinforcement.
Rather, use methods of positive reinforcements by offering some reward on doing some good activity. Delayed gratification plays an even better role.

If you can devise a simple marking system where you give your child points for each day he spends without playing the game, at the end of the week you give him some simple reward. Over a period of time, this will help him to overcome his habits. Your child psychologist will help you understand the situation and intervene better.
With such measures you would surely be able to make him active, outgoing, bold and smart person

Hope that helps.

Brief Answer:
Positive reinforcement and delayed gratification are the simple methods

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

Giving a short compilation of behavioral modification techniques that suits your child, can only be devised after carefully studying and analyzing your child. It also needs to be followed up so that the interventions can be modified after gauging the response. That is the reason I am asking you to consult a child psychologist. The simple intervention that works, consists of positive reinforcement as I have already mentioned. Please note that unless done in a systematic way, 'rewarding' is not likely to be effective. A child psychologist can clearly guide you in this regard.

I would have loved to guide you further but it is actually a two way discourse including much explaining to be done. The first thing is to set up a proper system.
