My question is, what is causing his muscle cramps. I have heard it could be an electrolyte imbalance, but he drinks gatorade and a multivitamin. They are getting so severe that he gets lightheaded and they are followed by severe chills.

This is certainly unusual. Chills should not be associated with muscle cramps. I would suggest labwork including CBC, CMP, TSH, CK, RF, and an EKG. Sometimes autoimmune disorders such as thyroid disease or rheumatoid arthritis could present this way. I think a physical exam and labwork are indicated. Often these questions online are really meant to ask if we feel you should visit a doctor for an exam and labwork, and I think in this case the answer is clearly yes.
