Posted on Mon, 9 Mar 2015
Question: I have a left varicocele which hurts me.
At the moment I have no plans for surgery.
How does sex affect my condiiton? Does it help prevent atrophy? Does it make my condition worse. Please explain.

Brief Answer:
Worsens the pain

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Unoperated varicocele can negatively effect your condition. It does not prevent atrophy however it is known to cause reduced sperm count and fertility.
I must add here that sex might worsen the pain as well.

I recommend that you get it operated as soon as possible

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me

I still don't have clear answers-
You mentioned that sex can increase the pain - why?
Does the actual sex make the varococele worse? Please explain if yes\no\doesn't affect - and why?

Thank you very much.
With great appreciation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for getting back. Let me try again to make things clear

1. Any form of physical exertion is known to increase pain of the varicocele. Spermatic cord holds up each testicle. It also contains the veins, arteries and nerves that support these glands. Physical exertion causes torsion at the spermatic cord causing more pain.
2. Sex does not make varicocele worse but since there is a momentary increase in the blood flow to genital structures it could increase in size and then go back to normal.

Thank you very much for your clarity in your previous response - I greatly appreciate your help.

Let me ask you mentioned about a momentary increase of blood flow which could increase the size of the varicocele during sex-

Questions - I often notice that before the actual release of semen, just from the actual hardening of the penus, there is some slight moisture that can be felt at the tip of the penus even 20 minutes before the actual release of the semen.

1) Is that moisture due to my varicocele - that increase of size?
2) Is that moisture semen? If no, what is it? What is causing it?
3) If no, does every man have such a moisture?

Thank you in advance.

I like the clarity of your thoughts, I know exactly what you need from me. I shall try to answer your questions one by one

1. The moisture what you feel is what is known is precum
2. Yes it is semen
3. It is a normal pre ejaculatory phenomenon
4. Every man will have pre cum before ejaculation
5. It is not related to your varicocele.

I hope I was of help, I am sorry for the short delay in my reply it was a very busy day at the hospital
